A teenager passed by, slowed, and handed Joshua a sandwich. No words. Just kindness. He said, “Thanks,” and handed the sandwich to Lucky without a second thought. Lucky ate it quickly, tail wagging. Joshua smiled despite the ache in his stomach. This was enough.

Later, Joshua waited outside a soup kitchen. When he finally got a bowl of soup, someone bumped into him, spilling it all over the ground. A stray dog licked it up. The dog was hungry, just like him. Frustrated, Joshua turned to the man who had bumped him
“You couldn’t wait your turn?” he snapped. The man grabbed Joshua by the collar, but before he could do more, the dog growled, lunging at him. The man stepped back, muttering a curse, and left.
Joshua was stunned. The dog had helped him. That was the moment he decided to call it Lucky.
