Hashima Island, Japan – The Battleship Island
Hashima Island, also known as Gunkanjima or “Battleship Island,” is a ghost island off the coast of Nagasaki, Japan. Developed in the late 1800s as a coal mining hub, it once housed over 5,000 people living in tightly packed apartments. The island was a symbol of Japan’s industrialization, complete with schools, shops, and even a hospital.

However, when the coal reserves ran dry in 1974, the island was abandoned, and it quickly fell into decay. Today, Hashima is a haunting reminder of Japan’s industrial past, with its crumbling buildings and rusted structures standing as a monument to the lives once lived there.
