THE MIRACLE
Brooks saw the tiny, wrinkled face on his screen.
Tears streamed down his cheeks like a river. He felt no shame.
And then he heard a sound around him.
It wasn’t a dispatcher announcement. It was applause.
The entire waiting area, all the passengers on his flight, the flight attendants, and the gate agents—everyone was clapping and cheering for him.
“It’s a girl!” someone shouted.
“Sir, you can fly to your family now,” the flight attendant said gently. “We waited for you.”
He ran onto the plane last. The entire flight, he stared at the screenshot of Millie’s first breath.
Brooks made it.
Two hours later, he burst into the hospital room.
Haley asked everyone to leave.
It was just the three of them. Brooks, Haley, and little Millie.
He picked up his daughter. She was so light, yet she took up every inch of his heart.
They only had 4 days.
96 hours later, he put his uniform back on, kissed his sleeping girls, and flew back to serve his country.
