The Smell of Fear
Everything changed on a Tuesday afternoon. Eve walked into Mr. Brown’s room and was instantly hit by a sharp, pungent odor.

Food was splattered across the floor. The bedpan had been kicked over, soaking the sheets and the wall in urine. Mr. Brown was huddled on the edge of the bed, shaking violently.
“Harry, what happened? Did you fall?” Eve rushed to him.
The old man started crying, refusing to make eye contact.

Eve knew better. Mr. Brown was weak, but he wasn’t strong enough to throw a tray across the room. She asked if Dr. Jordan had visited.
At the mention of the doctor’s name, the old man flinched and begged her to drop it.
