The Attack
The man was five feet away. Anna screamed, “Back off! I have nothing!”
She braced herself. She waited for the knife. She waited for the punch. She prayed Athena would do her job.
Suddenly, Athena lunged. The leash burned Anna’s hand as the dog launched herself at the attacker.
Anna squeezed her eyes shut, waiting for the screams of a mauling.
But instead of a scream, she heard… laughter?
Anna opened her eyes. Athena wasn’t tearing the man’s throat out. She was tackling him with hugs. Her tail was wagging so hard her whole body was shaking. She was licking the “attacker’s” face while he knelt on the pavement, laughing.
“Hey girl! I missed you too! I missed you, partner!” the man said, pulling down his hood.
It wasn’t a mugger. It was Tom—a retired cop and Athena’s former K9 handler.
