The Confrontation

The restaurant went quiet. The boys looked up at the tall man in uniform. They held out their box of sweets, hoping for a sale.

Risdon patted his pockets. He had no cash.

For a second, the boys’ faces fell. Another rejection. Another adult who couldn’t help. They prepared to turn away and head back out into the cold rain.

But Risdon didn’t move. He looked at their soaked clothes. He looked at their tired eyes.

He didn’t care about the candy. He cared about them.

He leaned down, eye-to-eye with the children, and asked five words that changed the entire atmosphere of the room.

“Have you guys had dinner?”

Risdon didn’t smile. He didn’t lecture. He simply nodded and pointed toward the counter. “Come on,” he said firmly. “You can get anything you want.”
