Footsteps in the Dark
A sound echoed from the corridor outside the room. Not a scream. Not a wave hitting the hull.
A footstep. A heavy, deliberate boot stepping onto the broken glass. Then another.
The chained man began to violently shake, scrambling backward against the steel bulkhead, trying to crawl away from the door even though he had nowhere to go. Mike’s brain kicked into primal overdrive. The captor was coming back.
Jeff lunged for the chains, gripping the padlock holding the man’s ankle. But it was too thick, too industrial. There was no key, and the crowbar wouldn’t fit. They had no time.

“We have to go! We come back with people!” Mike hissed, grabbing Jeff by the shoulder and hauling him backward.
They turned and bolted. They sprinted blindly through the dark, their flashlight beams bouncing wildly off the rusted walls. Boots slipping on the tilted floor, lungs burning with the toxic air, they didn’t look back. They threw themselves through the warped doorway and practically collapsed into their small boat. Jeff fumbled frantically with the mooring line, his hands shaking so violently he almost dropped his knife before finally cutting the rope.
The boat lurched away from the rusted hull, speeding into the open water.
The Cover-Up
Only when the shipwreck was a distant, gray silhouette did Mike finally find the breath to radio the authorities. He shouted broken sentences over the static: Coordinates. Wreck. Chained man. Someone else inside.
He expected disbelief from the Coast Guard dispatcher. Instead, he was met with a chilling, immediate silence, followed by an unnervingly fast response. Heavy, armed Coast Guard units were deployed within minutes.

But the real nightmare was just beginning.
When the heavily armed tactical units finally boarded the abandoned liner, they found the storage room. But the room was completely empty.
There was no captive. There were no chains. There were no food wrappers. The only thing left behind was the overwhelming, stinging scent of industrial bleach that had been hastily used to scrub the floor clean.
The classified truth, leaked months later, was horrifying. The abandoned cruise ship wasn’t just a wreck; it was being utilized by a sophisticated international syndicate as a “black site”—a mobile, untraceable offshore prison hidden in plain sight. The screaming man was a kidnapped European ex-banker held for an astronomical ransom. Because of the divers’ radio call, the captors had been tipped off to the approaching authorities and had managed to extract their prisoner via a fast-moving speedboat just 20 minutes before the Coast Guard arrived.
Following the incident, the wreck was permanently sealed by the military, guarded around the clock. Mike and Jeff were brought in for grueling interrogations and shortly after, both began receiving anonymous, highly specific threats that forced them to relocate entirely.

Today, they no longer dive into shipwrecks. They learned the hard way that the most dangerous things in the dark aren’t ghosts of the past. The real monsters are flesh and bone, hiding in the places the rest of the world has forgotten.
