Gavin always thought greed was something that happened to other people.
Not to him.
Not to a “good” son.
But when his father’s health began to fail, something cold and selfish awakened inside him — a hunger for the life he believed he deserved. The big house. The inheritance. The freedom.

And when the opportunity came, he didn’t hesitate.
He sent his father to a nursing home against his will…
so he could sell the old man’s home right out from under him.
But the moment Gavin returned to the house to collect the last pieces before the sale, he walked into a scene that shattered him. His father, pale and trembling, delivered a quiet sentence that crushed everything Gavin had built his hopes on.
And it was too late to undo anything.
A Son’s Secret Greed
In the beginning, Gavin told himself it was just “practical thinking.”
His father was dying.
He was the only child.
The inheritance was already his — right?
But those thoughts didn’t feel cold anymore. They felt… logical.
Night after night, Gavin walked through his father’s house imagining the freedom the money would give him. He had debts. Dreams. Plans.

He convinced himself that this wasn’t selfish — it was necessary.
But his father stubbornly refused to leave his home.
And that’s when Gavin crossed a line he could never step back from.
The Day the Van Arrived
The white nursing home van pulled up to the house on a grey morning.
His father opened the door with a confused smile…
but that smile vanished when the workers stepped forward.

“What is this?” he demanded.
Gavin avoided his eyes. “It’s time for you to get proper care.”
His father’s voice cracked — not with age, but with betrayal.
“You’re doing this for the house,” he whispered.
Gavin didn’t answer.
As the workers helped him into the van, the old man turned and stared directly at his son.
“You’ll regret this, Gavin,” he said softly.
Not angry — certain.
The van door shut.
And with it, the last fragile strand of trust between father and son snapped forever.
The House Becomes His Prize
The moment the van disappeared down the street, Gavin felt a thrill — dark, electric, intoxicating.
The house was finally his.
He moved through each room with the hunger of a claim-jumper searching for gold.
Snap — the chandelier.
Snap — the antique fireplace.
Snap — the carved banister.
He called a real estate agent.

“How soon can you get here?” he asked.
“Within the hour,” she replied.
Perfect.
When Julia arrived, her eyes widened at the enormous white mansion.
“You’re the owner?” she asked.
“Yes,” he lied without shame.
This was it. His new life was within reach.
The Visit He Didn’t Expect
Two days later, Gavin returned to the house to pick up more items before the first buyers arrived.
He stepped inside.
Something felt… off.
The air was still, heavy, almost watching him.
Then he saw movement in the living room.
He froze.

His father —
the man he had just sent away —
was standing there.
Fragile.
Pale.
Holding onto a cane with trembling hands.
“How…” Gavin whispered, stumbling backward. “How did you get here?”
His father lifted his chin.
“I walked out,” he said. “Your betrayal gave me more strength than you ever gave me love.”
Gavin’s stomach dropped.
Then he noticed he wasn’t alone.
There were four other people in the room:
A lawyer.
Two adult protective services officers.
And a stranger holding a file.
The room closed in on him.
“What is this?” Gavin demanded.
His father slowly pulled a document from his pocket.

“My new will.”
The Truth Shatters Everything
Gavin felt numb as his father spoke.
“I changed it weeks ago,” the old man said. “I knew this moment would come. A parent can feel when his child values money more than blood.”
He handed the document to the lawyer.

“The house, the savings, the land — everything will be donated to a foundation that helps abandoned seniors.”
Gavin’s knees gave out.
“And you,” his father continued, “will inherit nothing but the consequences of the choices you made.”
The APS officer stepped forward.
“Mr. Gavin, we have evidence of elder coercion, abandonment, and attempted financial exploitation. You need to come with us.”
Gavin’s breath caught.
“No… no, this isn’t how it’s supposed to go—”
But the officers were already guiding him toward the door.

Tears blurred his vision as he looked back at his father — calm, heartbroken, victorious.
“You said I’d regret it,” Gavin whispered.
His father nodded.
“And now you do.”
