A Stranger in His Own Home
Mark started watching Emily more closely.
He noticed how often she was on the phone — whispering, pacing, her voice tense.
She smiled less. She looked tired, distracted, sometimes even guilty.

He began to follow her quietly from room to room, pretending to feel for walls as before.
But behind the dark lenses of his glasses, his eyes were open — wide open — taking in everything.
And what he saw next shattered him.
The Call
One morning, while sitting at the kitchen table, he heard her phone buzz.
Emily froze before answering, glancing nervously toward him.
Her voice dropped to a whisper. “Yes… I know. I’ll take care of it. Just don’t call here again.”
Mark’s stomach twisted.
He could hear the fear in her tone, the tremble in her voice — but also something else. Guilt.
She ended the call abruptly, her face pale. Without a word, she grabbed her purse and hurried out the door.
For the first time in years, Mark stood up without pretending to need help and decided to follow her.
