The front yard alone made officials uneasy.
Dozens of rusted appliances poked out of the weeds like tombstones. Entire mountains of decayed newspapers, rotten mattresses, and broken toys formed strange shapes across the lawn. Stray cats wove through the wreckage like shadows.
