Inside Was a Maze of Darkness
Emergency responders had to shine their flashlights just to see.
Every surface — the walls, the floors, the windows — had disappeared beneath towering, unstable stacks of possessions:
- entire forests of plastic bags
- heaps of rotting books
- broken dolls with missing eyes
- piles of clothing forming walls
- dishes fossilized with food from another era

Dust hung in the air like fog.
