Manny slid his arms beneath the girl’s fragile body and lifted her. She weighed almost nothing, like a bundle of clothes.
As he hurried toward his patrol car, the dog followed at his heel, refusing to be left behind, as if bound to the girl by an invisible thread.
Inside the car, the heater roared to life. The girl’s eyes fluttered open briefly.
“Max…” she whispered before losing consciousness again.
