At the hospital, chaos followed quickly. Nurses rushed forward, but when they tried to wheel the girl away, the dog snarled and planted itself between her and anyone unfamiliar.
It refused to move.
There was no choice but to allow it to stay.
Manny remained close, calming the animal as doctors worked swiftly. Hypothermia. Dehydration. Bruises in different stages of healing.
“She hasn’t been cared for in a long time,” one doctor murmured.
