THE DNA GLITCH
“I think we’re related,” the email began.
Sophie Williams was an adoptee who had just taken a 23andMe test. She had found old news clippings about the “Pregnant 13-year-old from Mesa.”

But the DNA results didn’t make sense.
“The test says you aren’t my mother, Maria,” Sophie said over a video call. “But it says we share 25% of our DNA.”
If Maria wasn’t the mother, there was only one other person it could be.
Maria felt a cold sweat break out. The smell of her father’s old car leather seemed to fill her office.
