THE NEIGHBOR’S DISCOVERY
Weeks passed. The tension in the house was thick enough to taste.
Bonnie’s “mother” stopped singing. Her “stepfather” spent hours staring out the window, a shotgun leaning against the wall.
One day, a neighbor stopped by to borrow some sugar.
Bonnie, still excited about her “fame,” saw an opportunity. While the adults were talking, she slipped the photo out of her pocket.
“Look,” Bonnie whispered to the neighbor. “I’m the girl from the store.”

The neighbor took the photo. She looked at the girl. She looked at Bonnie.
“That’s very nice, dear,” the neighbor said, her voice trembling. “I have to go now.”
She practically ran to her car. Bonnie felt a sudden wave of cold sweat.
I did something bad, she thought. They’re going to be so angry.

Suddenly, the front door slammed open. Her stepfather grabbed her backpack.
“Get in the car! We’re leaving. NOW!”
