THE HIDDEN WITNESS
Benjamin seated him at the best table in the staff area.
He didn’t bring leftovers. He brought a masterpiece.
Lasagna, a glass of wine, fresh bread.
While Santiago ate, Benjamin sat nearby, wiping his hands on a towel.
“I was in your shoes once,” the boy suddenly admitted. “Two years on the streets. Until one kind man gave me a chance washing dishes.”
Santiago stopped chewing.
“I dream of opening my own place,” Benjamin continued, staring into space. “A place where they don’t look at your clothes. Like this restaurant… Do you know the owner?”
Santiago nodded, hiding the trembling in his hands.
“Mr. Santiago… A great man. It’s a shame he doesn’t see what his managers are turning into at the other spots.”
He sees. He sees everything right now.
The camera kept recording.
Santiago finished his meal. He pulled an envelope from his pocket.
“Thank you, son. This is for you.”
He left a $1,000 tip on the table.
“Hey, I can’t take th—” Benjamin started, but the chair was already empty.
The old man had vanished like a ghost.
But the real shock was waiting for Benjamin a month later.
