THE PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR’S REPORT
The report arrived on a Tuesday morning. It was thicker than Daniel expected.
“She’s been fired from her last three jobs,” the investigator reported. “Not for neglect. For ‘over-attachment.’ Parents said she acted like the children were hers.”
Daniel’s grip tightened on the paper.
Then he found the section on Michael.
Michael was Rachel’s younger brother. He had Cerebral Palsy. He had died in a state-run facility while Rachel was away at college.
She’s not just a nanny, Daniel realized. She’s a woman on a mission of penance.
He went back to the cameras. He saw Rachel talking to the boys’ physical therapist.
She was handing the therapist a stack of cash. Her own salary.
“Use this for the extra sessions,” Rachel whispered on the recording. “Their father won’t pay for the experimental stuff. He’s too afraid to hope.”
Daniel felt a wave of shame hit him. He had billions, but a woman with nothing was the one truly investing in his sons.
He decided to confront her. But Rachel had one more secret waiting.
