THE MEDICAL SHADOW
At dinner, David mentioned the boy to his wife, Jennifer.
She laughed, but her eyes remained cold. “David, he’s just a street kid looking for a handout. Don’t let a beggar mess with your head.”
But David couldn’t sleep. He went to his home office and pulled out Emily’s old medical records.

He called Emily’s original surgeon the next morning.
“Mr. Mitchell,” the doctor sounded surprised. “The injury was incomplete. We expected her to be walking months ago with the right physical therapy.”
“But Jennifer told me the therapy was too painful for her,” David stammered.
“No,” the doctor replied. “Your wife cancelled all the sessions. She said you didn’t want them.”

David realized the “Pizza” of lies was falling apart. He needed a trap.
He told Jennifer he was going on a three-day business trip. But he never left the driveway.
