THE FROZEN KITCHEN
Officer Gonzalez stepped inside the house. The first thing she noticed wasn’t the theft.
It was the cold.
The air inside the house felt like a tomb. It was middle of winter, yet there was no sound of a furnace kicking on.
She followed Lewis into the kitchen to fill out the paperwork. That’s when she saw it.

“Mr. Harris,” Gonzalez said, her voice dropping to a whisper. “Is that how you’re heating your home?”
Lewis looked at the floor, his face flushing with a mix of shame and stubbornness.
“My heater broke years ago,” he muttered. “I do what I have to do.”
He’s breathing in carbon monoxide just to keep his fingers from freezing, Gonzalez realized.
The theft of the tools was a crime. But the way this hero was living was a tragedy.
Gonzalez reached for her radio, but she didn’t call for backup. She called for a miracle.
