Four years passed. The Archers returned to the U.S., but the house felt empty.

Tom never stopped thinking about that stormy day. He kept in touch with a naval officer at the Yokosuka base, a man named Miller.

One morning, an email arrived. It contained a batch of photos from a recent ceremony on the base.

Tom zoomed in. His breath hitched. The dog had the same distinct blue eyes. The same white patch on his chest.

“It can’t be,” Tom whispered. “He died in the storm.”
