Miller explained that four years ago, a U.S. destroyer had spotted something on a remote, uninhabited rock in the middle of the ocean.
It was a starving, half-drowned dog. He had survived by eating scraps of washed-up fish.
The sailors brought him to the base. They called him “The Ghost” because he seemed to appear and disappear in the barracks.
“He’s been living on the base for years, Tom,” Miller said. “He’s a local legend.”
But when Tom arrived at the base to claim him, the officers pulled him aside.
“There’s something you need to see in the archives first,” the Base Commander said.
They stopped in front of a photo from the 1940s. It showed Tom’s father, Tom Sr., standing next to a massive navy dog.
Tom’s heart stopped. The dog in the 80-year-old photo was a mirror image of Kiseki.
