Lydia had just gone through a difficult and emotionally draining divorce. Hoping to start fresh and create some positive new memories with her two children, she decided to plan a fun family outing.
Her children, fourteen-year-old Sarah and seven-year-old Kevin, were everything to her. However, Kevin had recently been acting out and pushing boundaries. Knowing it would be hard to keep a constant eye on both of them, Lydia established a strict ground rule before their trip: Sarah had to stay with her younger brother at all times.
With this rule in place, the family set off to the city’s massive, highly popular water park. The park was incredibly crowded, filled with the sounds of rushing water, shrieking children, and parents shouting instructions.
It featured at least six different towering water slides, a dedicated children’s splash zone, and several other attractions. However, there were also closed-off sections under construction.
Despite the overwhelming noise and the sheer number of visitors, Kevin and Sarah were immediately drawn to the massive slides. Kevin, practically vibrating with excitement, begged to go on the big green slide.
Sarah, already feeling a bit exhausted by her brother’s boundless energy, reluctantly agreed, shooting a tired glance at their mother. Trusting her teenage daughter to handle the situation, Lydia found a quiet spot, sat down, and began to read her book.
For a while, everything seemed fine. But the day quickly took a dark turn. According to their plan, Sarah and Kevin were supposed to meet at the red slide for one final ride before returning to their mother.
Kevin, however, had other plans. While Sarah waited, Kevin had crossed paths with some boys he had met earlier in the day. These boys dared him to explore one of the park’s off-limits areas.
