The Shocking Destination
Susan and Richard got into their car.
The drive was silent. The tension was thick enough to cut with a knife.
Susan clutched her purse, wondering what they would find at 443 Washington Street. An old house? A park?
Richard turned the corner and slowed the car.
Susan gasped. “I know this place.”
It wasn’t a house.
It was the orphanage. The exact place she had dropped Kevin off days earlier.

“This is the address from the dream,” Susan whispered, tears filling her eyes.
She scanned the building. Her eyes locked onto a ground-floor window.
There, sitting alone on the floor, was Kevin.
He was looking up at the sky, his lips moving silently.
Susan scrambled out of the car and ran to the window. Richard followed close behind.
“Kevin?” she called out.
The boy looked up, startled.
“What are you doing, sweetheart?” Susan asked through the glass.
Kevin placed his hand against the window pane.
“I’m praying that my mother will come and take me away from here.”
Susan froze.
Take me with you.
The words from her dead son in the dream. The words from the living boy in the window.
It wasn’t a coincidence. It was a command.
